The Path

My notations the the above map are in blue. As you can see my house was in the center of the path of the tornado.

Map Numbers:

1: This is the 7-11 near my house. It sustained roof damage and the plate glass windows all across the front blew into the store. Across the street from the 7-11 was a paint store built of concrete block. The front half of this building was completely demolished.

2: This was the 7th Street Barber Shop. I always had my hair cut here and it was somewhat of a city landmark. The walls inside the place were covered with photographs and news stories of the 1937 flood in which the flood waters reached the barber shop. This building was completely demolished. Two friends of mine who work in the club next door happened to remember that the owner was still inside cleaning up. They lifted the roof up and found him and pulled him to safety with only moderate injuries.

3: Fred's Diner. They fed the homeless on the night of the storm and held a benefit on the Sunday afterwards.

4: This is a residential area were several homes were completely leveled.

5: The Montgomery Ward's distribution center where tractor-trailers were tossed around like toys.

6: Burns Graphic building where a brick wall collapsed on and killed a homeless person seeking shelter there.

7: The Cash America Building.

8: Calvary Cathedral.

9: Tandy Center.

10: Bank One Tower.

11: UPR Plaza
